Cookies and analytics
We use two kinds of statistics. Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views for every visitor; it sets no cookies and stores nothing that identifies you. Google Analytics tells us more about which articles are read, and under UK GDPR and PECR that needs your consent. Until you accept, analytics storage stays denied: Google sets no cookies and receives only a basic, cookie-free signal that a page was opened. If you decline, that does not change, and we do not ask again on the next page.
Your choice is stored in your browser's local storage under the key
midcent-consent. Clearing your browser data for this site clears the
choice and brings the banner back.
Advertising
We do not show advertising yet, and advertising storage stays denied whatever you choose. We are applying to show ads from Google AdSense. When they start, Google and its partners will use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites — but only if you agree in a consent message that will replace the banner, and this notice will be updated first. You can read how Google uses data from sites like ours at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and turn off personalised ads at adssettings.google.com.
Newsletter
If you sign up for the newsletter we store your email address, the time you signed up, and which page you signed up from. We use it to send you the newsletter and for nothing else. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us to delete your address at privacy@midcent.uk.
Article feedback
When you rate an article we store the rating against that article, not against you. It is a running tally per article — no account, no identifier, nothing that points back to a reader.
Where your data is held
Newsletter addresses are stored in Cloudflare's key-value storage, which our site runs on. Cloudflare Web Analytics is also run by Cloudflare. Analytics data, where you have consented to it, is processed by Google. Both may involve transfers outside the UK under the safeguards those providers publish.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Write to privacy@midcent.uk and we will respond within one month. If you are not satisfied you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
